Club mix DRI

Trio KEiiNO represented Norway in the Tel Aviv Eurovision Song Contest.

The won the Norwegian Melodi Grand Prix held on March 2.

KEiiNO are Fred Buljo, Alexandra Rotan and Tom Hugo and they wrote their song, Spirit In The Sky, with Henrik Tala and Alex Olsson.

The song is sung in English with a few bits of Sámi thrown in by Buljo.

Spirit was released as a digital single on January 25, an extended Club mix followed on February 8.
The acoustic version was released on April 12.

No physical release or promo was issued but Spirit In The Sky was released on the CD OKTA (see below)

In 2021 a new remix was released. The KAUTOBAHN remix was released on May 20.

In 2022 a ridiculous sped up version was released to satisfy the Tik Tokkers with an attention span of a gnat.

KEiiNO went on to win the televote in the final.

Here's a bit from their bio: "KEiiNO is a Norwegian-Sámi-Finnish lovechild born in late summer 2018. With a goal of creating arctic pop-bangers they mix Sámi joik, Nordic folk and camp pop in a synth heavy sound". That sums up the sound of Spirit nicely.

OKTA
On May 15 2020 the band release their long awaited debut album.
The album has 10 tracks of which six have already been released as digital singles (including Spirit In The Sky). You can buy the CD from the KEiiNO website

Who is KEiiNO band?
The KEiiNO members were brought together with the Melodi Grand Prix and Eurovision in mind but we met Alexandra Rotas already in the 2018 MGP where You Got Me, a duet with Stella Mwangi, ended 3rd. Before that she was in the superfinal of the Junior MGP in 2010 with Det Vi Vil (What we want).
Singer and Songwriter Tom Hugo (Hermansen) also has a bit of MGP history. In 2013 he entered with Det Er Di (That's you) but he got stuck in the first semi. In 2018 his I Like I Like I Like didn't make it to the final four.
He's also a prolific songwriter and wrote several hits for Asian boybands like EXO, SHINEE or TVXQ.

Sámi Rapper/Joiker/Producer Fred Buljo (Fred-René Øvergård Buljo) was a member of Sámi rap outfit Duolva Duottar who released their only album Dá lea Duolva Duottar in 2011. They're still active and you can listen to their music through your Spotify and the like. Check out their most recent single Markanstallu!

10 songs were in the running to represent Norway in the 2019 contest.

San Marino - Serhat - Say Na Na Na

A sigh of relief* was felt across Europe when SMTV announced Serhat would be the Tel Aviv representative for San Marino.

The song is titled Say Na Na Na and is released as a digital maxi with 10 versions (see below).
The track was released on March 7.
Here's the official video.

A cdsingle is made and is available to the public in limited quantities.
The promo kit has the same cds and also includes a promo version of the Serhat album That's How I Feel (in card sleeve). and some paper stuff.
A USB card was also handed out. It includes the cdsingle tracks as mp3, mp3 snippets of the album tracks plus photos and bios.

Sing Na Na Na / Di Na Na Na
On July 19 A German version was released. Sing Na Na Na comes in 6 mixes (see versions below)

That's How I Feel
And then there's the album we have all been waiting for. That's How I Feel is out now through digital sources. Promo versions in cardsleeve were made.

The album includes Say Na Na Na and three versions of I Didn't Know and most of Serhat's singles.
It has both versions of Total Disguise, one with Helena Paparizou and one with Viktor Laszlo.

A 2CD version with 28 tracks is released out now and available throught the German Cap Sounds website (here) It has five Say Na Na Na's but all versions we already know from the cdsingle. (marked $ in the versions list).

Also has five versions of I Didn't Know, Serhat's 2016 entry.

Serhat (Hacıpaşalıoğlu) participated for San Marino in 2016 with I Did't Know but failed to reach the final. But Serhat has become a bit of a cult hero in Eurovision circles and we love him.
When he re-recorded his Eurovision entry with Weather Girl Martha Wash he scored a hit in the USA Billboard dance charts. Anyway, read all about Serhat's first adventure here at the Stockholm Collection.

Sweden - John Lundvik - Too Late For Love

John Lundvik is the winner of this years Melodifestivalen and he represented Sweden with the song Too Late For Love.

The song is written by John Lundvik himself, Anderz Wrethov and Andreas “Stone” Johansson.

Too Late For Love can be found on the Melodifestivalen 2CD and has also been released as a digital single.
The song already went to #1 in the Swedish charts the day before the MF final.

No physical release or promo was issued.

Too Late For Love was the winner of the jury-vote in the Tel Aviv final until the votes were corrected. So he made it second with the juries but went up one place (from 6 to 5) in the total results, swapping places with Norway.

Four remixes were released on April 26 (digital, see versions below)
7th Heaven also made a remix which you listen to on their website.

John Lundvik's first Melodifestivalen appearance was in 2018 when he finished 3rd with My Turn. It became a #10 hit in the Swedish charts.
Too Late For Love and My Turn are also released on the digital 5-track EP My Turn, (out since May 10).

London born singer songwriter John Hassim Lundvik has been writing songs for the likes of Sanna Nielsen and Anton Ewald (Natural from MF 2014). When You Tell The World You're Mine, a song he wrote with Jörgen Eloffson, was performed at the wedding of Swedish Crown Princess Victoria.
In 2016 he wrote and recorded All About The Games, the official song for the Swedish Olympic team.

This year Lundvik had another song in the competition. He is one of the songwriters of the U.K. entry Bigger Than Us by Michaèl Rice.

By now you know the drill. Melodifestivalen has 4 rounds, a second chance round and a final on March 9.

MF In the charts

So Melodifestivalen is big business and it makes Lotta Svenska Kronor, and a large part of the often recordbreaking televoting revenue always goes to charity, åååååh....

There is a huge decline in the success of the MF though, ever since they are trying to create it as a Spotify playlist sales/streams of the official album are way down. From being the #1 best selling album every year to finishing 14th in 2018 and 43rd in 2019. Down to # 96 in 2021 and not even in the top 100 in 2022. But it has to be noted that the Melodifestivalen album is not available as a streaming album. (Streaming counts heavily towards the charts)

Below are the chart results of Melodifestivalen and Eurovision hits in the Swedish top 60 since 2002, when the 32 song MF was introduced.
In a sudden change, 2010 saw only a few entries released on cdsingle, and it showed decline in the number of MF hits.
Since a few years streaming is the main factor in  the Swedish charts so Eurovision hits chart without being released on cdsingle. Some only chart one or two weeks just after the contest.

Hatari won this years Söngvakeppninn with the song Hatrið Mun Sigra (Hate will prevail). The band wrote their song themselves.
Hatari are Klemens Hannigan,  Matthías Tryggvi Haraldsson and Einar Stefánsson.

Hatrið Mun Sigra was not released as a digital (or physical) single but can be found on the Söngvakeppninn (digital) release and the Tel Aviv 2CD.

Neyslutrans 2020
January 17, 2020 sees the release of the debut album by Hatari titled Neyslutrans. (Capitalist Google translates it as "Consumption of Trans, but it probably should be Trance").
It has 13 tracks including Hatrið Mun Sigra, early favorite Spillingardans and post Eurovision single Klefi/Samed with Bashar Murat.
On the digital version of Hatrið Mun Sigra is subtitled Xtended and it has a longer intro. I'm not sure if this is also the version on the physical releases.

And, for us physicalist capitalists, there's a CD and LP release.

Neyslutrans remixed 2021

On February 19 the band released a remixed version of the Neyslutrans album.

It includes a high paced electronic remix of Hatrið Mun Sigra by Vindimøde.

The (digital) album is available at Hatari's Bandcamp and other usual digital platforms

According to a Icelandic Music News interview participating (and winning) Söngvakeppninn is the "first step in renewed plan to bring down capitalism". Beginning with the Icelandic tourists industry. So now you know.

The band released their first EP Neysluvara (Consumer) in 2017 which includes fun titles like Tortímandi (Exterminator) and Biðröð Mistaka (Queue of mistakes)
In December 2018 they released a new single Spillingardans (Corruption dance).
They sing about popular issues like Death and Revolution in the capitalist society and Judgement day.
The band broke up after Spillingardans but re-united soon afterwards for Söngvakeppninn.

Australia - Kate Miller-Heidke - Zero Gravity

Kate Miller-Heidke won the first ever Australian pre-selection "Eurovision: Australia Decides Gold Coast 2019" with the song Zero Gravity written by Kate herself with husband Keir Nuttall.
The song was released as a digital single on January 25.
Remixes by 7th Heaven and ATT (see versions) were released on April 19.
Another remix just named Radio Edit was released on April 26.
The Acoustic version was released on May 3.

On May 14 all released versions (except karaoke) were bundled in a digital EP with yet another remix added: The Donatachi remix.

Australia had a preselection for the first time. And it was held at the Gold Coast obviously. (and, on a personal note, it was probably the best one of the year).
10 songs (out of 700!) fought it out on Saturday February 9.
Most songs have been released through digital sources.

The lady on the pole in the performance of Zero Gravity  in the Australian NF is Emma Waite from performing arts company Strange Fruit from Melbourne. For Eurovision Emma is joined by Emily Ryan. They have a website.

Who's Kate?

The 2016 Best Of CD

Up-Top not many people may have heard of Kate Miller-Heidke but Down-Under she has an impressive body of work to her name.
She's an award winning classically schooled alternative actress singer song/opera writer or something along those lines.
After a few years in a band (Elsewhere) in the early 00's she released a few singles and EP's to be followed by her first solo album Little Eve in 2007.
Second album Curiouser includes her biggest hit The Last Day On Earth (an Australian #3 in 2008, beautiful song, check it out!).
Two more top 5 albums followed with Nightflight (2012) and O Vertigo! (2014).

More recently she dressed up as a well known  Opera House and released a live album with the Sydney Symphony Orchestra.
In 2016 a compilation album The Best Of Kate Miller-Heidke Act One was released. 
In 2018 she (and hubby Keir Nuttall a.k.a. comedian Franky Walnut) wrote the original music to the award winning musical version of Muriel's Wedding.

An honorable mention must go to her 2015 Christmas single with The Beards, I'm Growing A Beard Downstairs For Christmas, which is gross.

2020 Vinyl

A limited edition vinyl 7"inch single was released on October 30, 2020. It coincided with the release of KMH's new album Child In Reverse. (The album does not have Zero Gravity though).

Let's Get Physical: Tel Aviv

Here's a quick checklist of this year's physical releases (CD's, vinyl) available the public. It's not a lot, really, but enough to do the Physical page again.

For promo and digital info please check each country's individual post.

Check out BeaRecords and you may just find what you need.

Singles

The first single released  is the one from Italy. It's a vinyl 7"inch, but you have to get the limited edition album box to get this item.

Eight other songs from the Sanremo contest have been released on vinyl single, find more info at the Italy post.
The second single release is also a vinyl single, it's Tulia's from Poland. Grrreat.
San Marino's Serhat has issued a cdsingle which may not be in the regular stores but it is sold through several 'regular' sources.
Netherlands has a vinyl 7" inch that first was only  available at Duncan Laurence's Paradiso concert, but it it got a Europe wide release on July 26. Better late than never Netta!

In 2020 a 10 inch EP was released by DL, also including Arcade.

Australia  Zero Gravity by Kate Miller Heidke was released as a vinyl 7"inch release on October 30 2020.

Compilations

The 2CD with all the songs from the show is expected on April 26.  It is the 20th time all songs from the contest are released on an official EBU endorsed CD.  How time flies.....
The DVD release (3-disc set) was released on June 23. It does not feature Madonna's interval act.

Hungary, Sweden, Croatia, Spain, Italy and Portugal all have CD albums out with the complete collection of 2019 National Final Songs.

Time Tunnel
And if you're going to Tel Aviv you can score a new 2CD compilation with Eurovision hits including TOY and Fuego from 2018. A collection of Eurovision winners and classics you probably already own in some form or another, but you know you want it anyway.
The album compiled by Time Tunnel 100FM radio is released on the Helicon label.
A few of the less likely entries on this compilation are Bandido by Azucar Moreno (which was a big hit in Israel), Alain Barrière, Co-Co. Beth and Caline and Olivier Toussaint.
It includes (only) four Israeli entries (the ones that won the contest). Of A Ba Ni Bi, Diva and Hallelujah Hebrew versions are included.
The 2CD is also available at Israel Music, where I bought it and it arrived in a week. See tracklist scan below. 

Artist's albums

Mahmood from Italy has his album out now on CD, LP and limited edition box set.

Pænda from Austria has her new album Evolution II out now.

Tulia's re-issued debut album Tulia (Poland) includes the original version of their Eurovision entry. Out on CD and 2LP. 

France: Bilal Hassani released his debut CD Kingdom on April 26.
Latvia's Carousel have been working on an album which will include their Eurovision song. No release date yet.
San Marino: Serhat's album That's How I Feel will get several physical editions soon.... (or not so soon, or not at all)
Miki from Spain released his album Amuza on September 13.
2020 sees the release albums by Hatari (Iceland, LP/CD) and Zalagasper (Slovenia, LP)
Also released in 2020, Norwegians KEiiNO release their album OKTA on March 15.


And then there's this:
Flash back to 2000, Nicki French was the U.K. singer with Don't Play That Song Again.

Luca Hänni represented Switzerland with the song She Got Me.
The song is written by Luca Hänni, Laurell Barker, Frazer Mac and Jon Hällgren.
The working title for the song was Dirty Dancing.

She Got Me secured the best placing (and first top 5) for Switzerland since 1993.

On July 26 7 remixes were released  through the usual digital sources.(see versions)
A duet version with Vangelis Kakouriotis is also released but not available in all territories.
This was performed at the Greek Mad TV award show 2019. Vangelis sings his bits in Greek.

She Got Me is already the third song for Laurell Barker in the Tel Aviv contest. She also co-wrote the entries from Germany and the United Kingdom.

In October 2020 Hänni's album 110 Karat was released. It includes the original/regular version of She Got Me as a bonus track.

If you have too much money you can also get the Fanbox edition which includes a facemask (!) Huamei earpods, a lanyard, wristband and an autographed card. In a box. A lot of things you don't need but no musical surprise.

Some trivia 
She Got Me by Luca Hänni is the first Swiss Eurovision entry to got to #1 in the Swiss charts since 1977's Swiss Lady by the Pepe Lienhard band. Luca spent three weeks at #1, Pepe eight!
We like it when a the country's music loving people get behind their entry.
Sending a popular star helped Switzerland this year, both in Eurovision (their best result since 1993) and in the charts.
Celine Dion, who won the contest, only managed a #11 hit in 1988, just as high as Piero Esteriores famous nil-pointer Celebrate in 2004.
She Got Me is Luca's 2nd #1 hit and his biggest hit ever in Switzerland. He had a #1 in 2012 with Don't Think About Me which also was a #1 in Germany and Austria. She Got Me didn't follow that up in those two countries.
